Biography

Derek Richardson is a sociology PhD candidate with interests in global health, organizations, and international development. He returns to Indiana University after spending 16 months in Cambodia collecting data for his dissertation, which uses ethnographic and interview methods to investigate how volunteer healthcare professionals from the Global North import and adapt medical expertise when treating patients alongside Cambodian healthcare professionals in nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Prior to becoming an Irsay Fellow, Derek was a research fellow with the Center for Khmer Studies (2024-2025), Fulbright US Student Program (2023-2024), and Cambodia Development Resource Institute (2023-2024).
